Medical/Biomedical

The manufacturers of medical devices have used Sono-Tek ultrasonic spray equipment for many years in a variety of applications. The most prominent of these are in the areas of :

Coating the interior of blood-collection tubes and related devices with various reagents such as clotting agents, heparin, and EDTA.

Lubricating syringe barrels with silicones

Applying adhesives to sutures

Micro-encapsulating pharmaceutical ingredients

Dispensing reagents into well plates

Stent coating

Stent coating:

All of these applications generally require very close control over the amount of material dispensed. Sono-Tek is experienced in every aspect of the liquid delivery process as it relates to ultrasonic atomization, and can provide or recommend systems that are capable of delivering minute amounts of material (down to a few microliters) within extremely close tolerances.

In order for you to gain a sense of the possibilities that are available in this wide-ranging area, we shall describe one example, the techniques that have been developed to spray the interior of blood-collection devices.

Spraying the interior of blood-collection devices using ultrasonic nozzles on a commercial scale dates back to the mid-1980s. Tubes from as small as those used in pediatric applications to large tubes, for example 13 mm x 120 mm, have been coated. The features that make spray coating desirable are:

A variety of substances have been sprayed onto both glass and plastic devices. These include silica-based materials used in serum separator systems, a variety of heparin-based compounds, EDTA, and first coats for plastic blood-collection systems.

The nozzles generally used in these applications are designed to accommodate the relatively long-length profile of a blood-collection tube. The stem of the atomizing portion of the nozzle, the slender front part of the nozzle, (see the Additional Technical Information page for details) can be made both small enough in diameter and long enough to encompass most coating requirements.

The example just described is only one of a multitude of applications that can benefit from the use of ultrasonic atomizing nozzles in the application of reagents in the manufacture of medical devices. Much more information is available.
